Welcome to the Lewis County Kentucky
Sheriff Department website. We are pleased you
have taken the time to learn about the sheriff department. I was
elected by the voters of
Lewis County in November 1998 and took office on January 4, 1999, and
continue the
succession of a long line of dedicated sheriffs that began in 1807.
Kentucky became a state
in 1792 and the county of Lewis was formed in 1806. The county was
named after
Meriwether Lewis of the now famed Lewis and Clark Expedition. I am
proud and humbled
to represent the historical tradition of sheriffs of Lewis County.
Sheriff Departments are truly the only real
"grass roots" law enforcement agencies that are
elected by the people and serve the citizens on a face-to-face basis.
Realizing this
responsibility, my deputies and I have developed and implemented a
strategic plan that will
secure and serve the needs of citizens on a proactive manner. Law
enforcement and service
activities range from investigating major crimes to delivering
prescription medication to
disabled and senior citizens.
My desire, from your
review of our website, is that you will have an appreciation of our full
law enforcement and service duties and of the men and women of the Lewis
County Sheriff
Department. Sincerely,
William D. Lewis
